“There are no absolute good or evil.”
Antinomyis the core of our creative work, we focus on the relationship between contradictions and symbiosis in the world through the study of the dark side of human nature. Reverse thinking paves the way to our quest for the spirit of truth and virtue. Instead of searching for the absolute truth in theatre, audiences are invited into multiple dimensions of contemplation in the process of questioning.
Colour, Sex, Nudity, Violenceare the four key elements of our aesthetic direction, together with our witty black humour, intense visual simulation in forms of physical theatre, multimedia and stage effects, tacit, unsaid realities are exposed in front of the eyes of the audience.
Our Origin
Artocrite Theatre, founded by six enthusiastic graduates of the School of Drama of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2010, began as a project-based theatre group. Since 2020, the company runs as a non-profit-making charity organisation under the recognition of the Inland Revenue Ordinance section 88, and had since then been presented by Leisure and Cultural Services Department and received various subsidies from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
In 2016, the company gained wide public and industrial recognition and appreciation when An Angel Dumped into New City, a joint production with The Whole Theatre Limited, won five awards at the 25th Hong Kong Drama Awards. From 2016 to 2019, the “Awakening Series” trilogy Sin, The Truth from Liar and Eve had received several awards and nominations at the 26th and 29th Hong Kong Drama Awards, the 9th and 12th Hong Kong Theatre Libre Awards, and the 2016 IATC (HK) Critics’ Awards.
The company launched its first overseas performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the United Kingdom and Seoul, South Korea in 2017–18. Me and Sailor Moon in a Subway Trip was a joint collaboration between artists from Hong Kong, Japan and Seoul, and was widely reported by the local media when it premiered at the Namsan Arts Centre.
Incorporated in 2020, Artocrite Theatre is now a full-time and professional theatre company aspiring to share its beliefs and productions with a wider audience in the global community.
From 2023 to 2025, the Venaissance series together with other productions were highly recognized in the industry, received multiple awards and nominations at the 32th and 33th Hong Kong Drama Awards, the 15th and 16th Hong Kong Theatre Libre Awards, the 2023 and the 2024 IATC (HK) Critics’ Awards. The particularly popular one I am Tree has won five Hong Kong Drama Awards (alongside five other nominations), and three Hong Kong Theatre Libre Awards (alongside two other nominations).Grateful for the love from audience and peers, the company is excited to continue the hard work and create the next great production.

Birdy Wong Ching Yan
Artistic Director and Co-founder of Artocrite Theater.
Graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (First Class Honours) Degree in Drama, Birdy has established herself as an accomplished stage performer, playwright and director. In 2016, she won the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Award for Young Artist. In 2021, she won The New York Fellowship from Asian Cultural Council for advanced study and artistic development in New York.
As a widely recognised multi-awards winning performer, Birdy is not only talented in her captivating acting and physical performances. Enthusiastic to speak for the isolated, powerless and neglected in the society, Birdy started writing her own original scripts and directed the work to share her big heart for this world. Being recognised by the audience and the industry with multiple playwriting and directing awards, she challenges herself more in every production, utilising the aesthetic of nudity and violence with delicacy and love, asking the audience to reflect and re-imagine the reality behind all sorts of veils and delusions. In her recent playwriting and directing work Dandelion Addicted to Heroin 2.0 (2024), inspired by the photo album Faces of Addiction, she discusses the complex humanity and social issues of “drug addicts” through an immersive theatrical experience, inviting the audience to look beyond societal labels into the life of these actual human beings.
Throughout the years, Birdy has won Best Script in the Hong Kong Theatre Libre; Script / Playwright of the Year and Director of the Year in the IATC (HK) Critics Awards; Best Director (Tragedy / Drama) in Hong Kong Drama Awards.
Birdy believes that arts is about collaborations and community, always drawing inspirations from different disciplines of arts. As a book lover, she has adapted multiple literary texts into theatrical productions, bringing the characters we love on stage, breathing life into the stories with her passion, her vision, her directing and performances while paying respect to the original works. The well received Awakening Series first adapted German lawyer Ferdinand von Schirach’s Crime and Guilt into Sins (2016), followed by The Truth from Liar (2016), an adaptation of Japanese author Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s In a Grove, and Eve (2019) the adaptation of French writer Thierry Jonquet novel Mygale. Her recent adaptation of French poet Charles Baudelaire’s text, Les Fleurs du Mal (2024), was also a huge success. Together with 12 young performers, she directed this cabaret-style performance in an exhibition hall, employing a unique use of musicality and physicality to question the meaning of life through this classic text.
With her global vision, Birdy collaborates with artists from all around the world, sharing and exchanging this love for theatre and people. She recently toured Kyoto, Tokyo, Brussels and Vienna with the show Kitty (2025) as a performer, and led the company team in the Kinosaki International Arts Center artist residency programme as a director.
